Legal Needs Screening and Referral

Answer a few questions to see what legal help may be available to you.

The purpose of this tool is to help you better understand your potential legal needs and to check whether you may qualify for free or reduced-cost legal services. After completing a short screening, you'll receive personalized referrals and resources, and may have the option to apply directly for services.

This screening tool is a project of many Louisiana legal nonprofits, including Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, the Louisiana Bar Foundation, and Lagniappe Law Lab. Development of this tool was funded by a Technology Initiatives Grant from the Legal Services Corporation. Together, we work to ensure Louisiana residents have access to the legal support they need.

We only collect the information needed to help connect you with the right legal services.

This tool works in two stages: a brief screening, followed by a more detailed intake if you choose to apply for services. During the screening process, we collect:

  • General information about your legal issue(s)
  • Parish of residence
  • Household size and income

This information helps determine eligibility for legal service providers in our database. If a provider accepts applications through our portal and you choose to apply online, we will ask for additional details to begin the intake process, such as:

  • Contact information (name, address, phone number, email)
  • Household, income, and asset information
  • Information about opposing parties, if relevant
  • Demographic information

Your information is kept strictly confidential and secure. We only share it with the legal service provider you choose to apply to, and it is never used for marketing or other purposes.

Once you start the screening, it should only take a few minutes. The online intake process may take around 15-20 additional minutes, depending on your circumstances.

Disclaimer

Please read carefully before continuing.

The purpose of this tool is to help you better understand your potential legal needs and to check whether you may qualify for free or reduced-cost legal services. Based on your answers, we provide referrals to trusted nonprofit legal aid providers or direct you to public resources that may be useful in addressing your situation.

Some legal aid providers have limits on the types of cases they can accept. For example:

  • Certain organizations cannot provide assistance with immigration matters due to federal restrictions.
  • Others may only serve people within a specific parish, income range, or citizenship status.

If your situation does not qualify for help from one provider, this tool will offer other resources or referrals when possible.

Using this tool does not create an attorney–client relationship between you and Lagniappe Law Lab or any of the legal service providers that may be listed. Completing the screening or submitting information through this tool is not the same as receiving legal advice or entering into a formal agreement for legal representation, and does not guarantee you will receive legal representation.

Apply for legal help
Before you begin

As a reminder:

  • Using this tool does not make you a client of any legal service provider and does not create an attorney-client relationship
  • Not all cases can be accepted by the organization you are applying for, so there is no guarantee for legal services
  • You should not use this application if you have an emergency issue that needs attention right away. If you are in danger, call 911

Getting started

To complete this application, you’ll need some basic information about your household and your legal issue, including:

  • Names and dates of birth for people living in your household
  • Information about your household income, expenses, and assets
  • Names of any people or businesses your issue is against (if applicable)

You don’t need to upload documents right now, and estimates are ok. However, you may later have to provide supporting documents to the legal service program.

After you submit

After you submit your application, it will be reviewed by the legal service provider. They will:

  • Your information will be reviewed to make sure you financially qualify for services, and there are no conflicts of interest
  • The service provider will contact you via the phone number or email address you provide to complete your intake and make a final eligibility determination
  • If they can take your case, you will be matched with an attorney. If they can't take your case, they may not be able to assist further, and you'll need to explore other legal help options on your own
